5 Trends from SXSW Interactive 2014 That Will Continue in 2015

South by Southwest Interactive, the biggest tech event of the year is just around the corner. With this year’s sessions revealed, we at ImageThink were eager to dive in and check out a preview of this year’s content for the conference happening in March. In 2014, ImageThink sponsored SXSW Interactive and produced live graphic recording at over 50 sessions, including every keynote. There were key trends that emerged from 2014’s conference that are still being shared on the net today. Taking a close look at this year’s lineup, we compared notes and made our predictions of this year’s trends.

5. Diversity

Diversity of race, culture and gender has been a major challenge in the tech industry. As an field that affects the lives and the future of millions, it has been great to see talks that focused on diversity, equality and gender politics. Last year we graphic recorded George Takei, a prominent voice in the LGBT community and speaker for racial equality in America, and the founder of Nasty Gal, speaking about women in business.

4. Robotics

2014 has been a year of discovering drones in your Brooklyn backyard and seeing your neighbors shooting music videos with them on the rooftop. Robots has slowly moved into the average person’s daily lives, and new solutions are bing revealed everyday. Last year we witnessed some demos of the latest innovations.

3. Immersive experience

The Internet of Things has successfully sustained its buzz all year. The IoT is a computing concept that describes a future where everyday physical objects will be connected to the Internet and be able to identify themselves to other devices. The technology can also incorporate sensors which then can be developed into wearable products.

2. Wearable Technology

Wearable technology refers to clothing and accessories incorporating computer and advanced electronic technologies. Usage of wearable technology is not limited to fashion alone, but can be widely adapted in entertainment, healthcare, sports and scientific research. Last year, we graphic recorded Shaquille O’Neal speaking about wearable technology in the athletic field.

1. Privacy

Last year, one of the first keynotes we graphic recorded was ‘The New Digital Age’ by Eric SchmidtJared Cohen and Steven Levy. In this talk, the panelists addressed the new digital landscape of today, including the challenge to balance privacy and security, the increasing need for raising awareness for cyber security breeches, and the moral questions behind the digital revolution. We also live recorded Edward Snowden’s virtual conversation with Chris Soghoian and Ben Wizner.

This year we are looking forward to more talks on the topics of art, science, content distribution, design, marketing and more. If you have themes and talks that you would like to recommend, please tell us in the comment. ImageThink is sponsoring the 2015 SXSW Interactive once again, with live graphic recording at hand-selected sessions over the course of the week. We will be updating our schedule soon, so check back in and don’t miss out on the opportunities to see some of the best talks of the year come to life.
