Aloha 2011 Highlights

90 professional graphic recorders create imagery of complex ideas in a graphics jam.

This year’s annual conference of graphics recorders, graphic facilitators, and consultants who harness the power of group visuals in their work was held in Honolulu. Three days of workshops around the business, craft, and community of graphic recording left our mind’s reeling, our ambitions re-energized, and bodies tan.

My top take aways
1. The world understands the power of visual thinking like never before. Our field is experiencing a surge of attention. CNN, Fast Company, Harvard Business Review have all run features on graphic recording this year. Ours is a messy, confusing world that benefits from simple visuals.

2. The graphic recording community would benefit from set standards and ethics. Our industry is comprised by a small a group of uniquely talented individuals. As it grows, standardizations will ensure that the clients we serve have consistent quality and experiences.

3. When translating ideas into visuals, not drawing, is just as important as drawing.

4. Visual thinkers and translators are also incredible dancers!

Many thanks to the hardwork and thoughtfulness of the conference planners, Lynn Carruthers and Sophia Liang.
