By: Greta Hayes, graphic recorder at ImageThink (@imagethink).

As graphic recorders, we at ImageThink are constantly organizing and drawing the big ideas we’re hearing. In our last post, Derrick mentioned the importance of simplicity in icons and drawings in what we do. So, how do we do it? These drawing tips and tricks will give you insight we’ve developed to draw for our clients.

Plan-Ahead-ImageThink

Make a plan

Sketching out a rough idea of what you’d like to convey and where you want objects to go is a great drawing technique to use to start a drawing. You will easily be able to see the ‘bigger picture’ as spatial relationships between objects will become clear.

Simple-Shapes-ImageThink

Break objects down into their simplest forms

I recommend using basic, easy shapes and combining them, which will create a ‘skeleton’ of a proportionate image.

Monkey-StayLoose-ImageThink

Stay loose and relaxed

Don’t let your hand, wrist, or arm get tense! Use your whole arm from your shoulder (not from your wrist) and make large gestures.

Frida-Draw-What-You-See-ImageThink

Draw what you see, not what you think you see

One of the best drawing tips is that grounding your skills in accurate spatial awareness allows you to have creative flexibility down the road. Remember, Frida Kahlo painted in her iconic eyebrow and mustache!

Cat-Practice-ImageThink

Practice!

Like anything, practicing your skills and drawing techniques will make you better and better.
