“If You Aren’t Thinking Creatively, You Aren’t Thinking At All”
July 19, 2011
I recently met and graphic recorded for award winning designer and author Ralph Caplan who spoke about what is design. While I was visualizing Caplan’s talk, I found myself inspired by his philosophy. He firmly believes that thinking is best done when the hands are active. As someone who draws while they think, I couldn’t agree more! Caplan challenged the audience by asking them to contemplate what good they bring to the world with their work, in other words, design should solve a social challenge. With all the talk about promoting creative thinking, I found his proclamation “If you aren’t thinking creatively, are you really thinking at all?” a refreshingly funny and critical. His book, By Design: Why There Are No Locks on the Bathroom Doors in the Hotel Louis XIV and Other Object Lessons, is on my summer reading list.
