This is no April fool’s joke, we are heading up the spring season with some fresh thoughts and drawings from our friends in the visual-thinking & artist community! As of late, we’ve been trying to learn as much as we can about how visual thinking activates the brain, engages our interest and makes us, well, smarter! We’ve asked some of our peers and colleague from around the world to share what they have been reading in the form of visual summaries (otherwise known as graphic recording, sketchnotes, visual notes, doodles, etc!) We are happy to kick-off the weekly series with an Australian based graphic facilitator, Rebecca Lazenby.

Joshua Foer, MOONWALKING WITH EINSTEIN: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything

Joshua Foer, MOONWALKING WITH EINSTEIN: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything Joshua Foer’s new book, Moonwalking with Einstein is an engaging description of his quest to become the USA memory champion. Foer explores the art of memory and the amazing cognitive abilities of our brains to recall visual images. After studying for just one year and hanging out with mental athletes who declared that “anyone can do it”, by using imagery and mnemonics Foer is able to remember the order of a deck of cards in under two minutes. Foer tells how he used historical techniques for building memories, such as thinking about distinctive images in familiar places and travelling through them. As well as having a wicked memory by the end of it all, he appreciates how memories shape us; “our ability to find humor in the world, to make connections between previously unconnected notions, to create new ideas, to share in a common culture”. For me, that is also a great description of how graphic recording can benefit groups, so I summarised a few key points into a chart.
