Bringing Event Tweets to Life: Visual, 3D and Video

07_smartercommerce_imagethink_twittermural This year at IBM’s Smarter Commerce Global Summit in Nashville, we had a chance to do something a little different with the Twitter mural of the event. A Twitter mural is a visualization of selected tweets that unfolds over the course of an event — whether it’s a few hours or a few days. Participants tweet using the event hashtag, and our graphic recorders choose some to highlight by illustrating the tweet on the mural. At Smarter Commerce, we created a 3D installation that gradually filled up with illustrated tweets throughout the conference. After we illustrated a tweet, we’d reply to the author with a photo of their tweet. This always triggered another flurry of activity on the #smartercommerce hashtag as attendees picked up and re-tweeted the images.

Vine: A new dimension

The Twitter mural provided us a perfect opportunity to play with Vine, the new social app that features 6-second video clips. The Vine format lent itself well to our drawing process, resulting in micro-animations as each tweet became a picture. A Twitter mural adds a layer of visual content to the social conversations that are evolving during a conference, but it also breathes new life into key insights from conference sessions.
